We recently got a call from a customer — let's call him Mike — who had just come home from a long 13-hour workday. He told us, “When I turn on the fan, I get this hum. I don’t know if it’s the switch or the fan, but I just want it done right.”

Mike had already been to the big-box store, looked at the wall of switches, and decided the parts felt a little flimsy. He also mentioned something that instantly made our ears perk up: his ceiling fan was on a dimmer switch. As soon as he said that, we knew we were probably looking at the most common cause of humming ceiling fans we see.

  • Fan-only speed control: Looks similar to a dimmer but is labeled for “fan speed” or “fan control” and is designed for motors.

  • Remote or wall control kits: Many modern fans come with their own matched control systems that keep everything quiet and safe.

  • Tighten all screws: Check the fan’s mounting bracket, canopy, blade arms, and light kit. Loose hardware can amplify vibration into a buzz.
  • Balance the blades: If the fan wobbles, use a balancing kit (often included with the fan) or gently clean each blade and ensure they’re not warped.
  • Listen at different speeds: If the hum is only at one speed, it may be a failing speed coil or control in the fan that a pro should check.

If you’ve tightened everything and the hum is still there — especially if it’s coming from the switch — it’s time to look back at the electrical controls.

How We Diagnose a Humming Fan on Site

  1. Inspect the switch and wiring: We remove the wall plate, check the type of switch, look for dimmers, and verify all connections are tight and correctly made.
